How to Make the Perfect Pour-Over for Slow Weekends at Home
At Halo Coffee, we believe there’s a time for convenience, and a time for savouring. Our home-compostable capsules make it easy to enjoy exceptional coffee during the busy week, but when the weekend rolls in, it’s worth slowing down for something a little more hands-on.
Enter: the pour-over.
This simple brewing method brings out the delicate flavours and natural clarity in our specialty whole beans. And with just a little care, you can make a cafe worthy cup in your own kitchen. Here’s how to do it right.
What You'll Need
- Freshly ground Halo Coffee whole beans (we recommend Nepalese Everest for floral brightness or Honduras for a smooth, chocolatey cup)
- Hario V60 Dripper
- V60 paper filter
- A gooseneck kettle
- Scale
- Timer
- Mug or server
Step-by-Step Guide to the Weekend Pour-Over
1. Heat your water
Bring 300ml of filtered water to boiling.
2. Prepare the filter
Place the paper filter in the V60 and rinse it with hot water to remove any papery taste. Discard the rinse water.
3. Grind your coffee
Grind 15-20g of Halo beans to a texture like table salt. Freshly ground is best—it preserves the coffee’s aroma and complexity.
4. Add the coffee and start your timer
Place your V60 on a mug or carafe, add the ground coffee, and gently shake it to level the bed.
5. Bloom (0:00–0:30)
Pour a small quantity of hot water in slow circles, just enough to saturate all the grounds. Wait 30 seconds as the coffee ‘blooms’ and releases carbon dioxide.
6. The main pour (0:30–2:00)
Slowly pour the remaining water in a spiral motion, keeping the water level even. Aim for a total of 250g of water over about 2 minutes.
7. Let it drain and enjoy
Once the coffee has fully drained (around the 2:30–3:00 mark), remove the dripper and enjoy your freshly brewed cup.
Why Pour-Over Works for the Weekend
It’s not just about flavour (though that’s reason enough). Making a pour-over slows you down, lets you engage with your coffee, and turns a morning into a ritual. There’s something grounding about taking a moment for yourself, especially with a cup that tastes this good.
Weekdays? We’ve Got You Covered.
Of course, we know your Monday mornings might not allow for slow pours and spirals. That’s where our home-compostable capsules come in. Pop one into your Opal Machine and enjoy specialty coffee in under a minute, without compromising on sustainability or taste.
