Understanding the Differences: Classic Pulp Capsules vs. Our New Vegetable-Based Alternative Capsules

17/09/2024

At Halo Coffee, we’ve always been committed to providing sustainable coffee options that don’t compromise on taste or environmental responsibility. Over time, we’ve listened closely to your feedback and are excited to introduce our new vegetable-based alternative capsules alongside our beloved classic pulp capsules. We have no plans to eliminate our classic pulp capsules, instead we are offering customers an alternative option.

While both capsule options are eco-friendly and can be composted at home, there are some differences worth noting that may help you decide which one suits your preferences and lifestyle.

Why Offer a New Capsule Material? It’s All About Your Feedback

The new capsule material was developed in response to customer requests for a pod that could produce a stronger espresso and that is easier to eject from machines. We’re pleased to say that this vegetable-based material meets these needs while staying true to our sustainability values.

That being said, we still love our classic pulp capsules and the simplicity they bring. They’re designed to decompose wherever they land, so you never have to worry about their environmental impact.

Classic Pulp Capsules: Tried, True, and Good For the Planet

Our classic pulp capsules remain a favourite for good reason. Here’s some reasons why, and more information for best use:

  • Fast Composting: Made from waste sugarcane pulp, these capsules will fully break down within 28 days in a home compost bin, meaning they won’t stick around long in the environment.
  • Simplicity and Sustainability: Because of their natural materials, these capsules are perfect for those who want a product that decomposes easily, no matter where it ends up.
  • Freshness: For the best experience, we recommend consuming coffee in our classic pulp capsules within three weeks of opening the packaging.
  • Choice: With 12 different coffee options, from decaf to dark roast, our classic line offers a wide variety of blends to suit every palate.

The New Vegetable-Based Alternative Capsules: Durability Meets Sustainability

While we remain dedicated to our classic pulp capsules, our new vegetable-based alternative  capsules were developed to offer additional benefits and differ from our classic line in several ways:

  • Longer Composting Time : These capsules are made from 100% vegetable-based materials, including bio-sourced cereal flours and biopolymers. They are certified home compostable by TÜV Austria, and will compost within 6 months in a garden compost bin.
  • Durability: The vegetable-based capsules are designed to be more durable, making them easier to eject from machines after brewing. Additionally, they provide enhanced protection against oxygen spoilage, which gives them a longer shelf life.
  • Focused Offerings: Currently, the vegetable-based capsules are available with two coffee options, though we plan to expand this range based on customer demand.

Which Capsule Is Right for You?

We recommend choosing based on your personal preferences, home compost setup, and brewing habits:

  • If you prefer a stronger espresso pour or have had issues ejecting pods from your machine: The new vegetable-based capsules may be the best fit for you. Their durability and shelf-life make them ideal for those looking for convenience without compromising on taste or sustainability. However, it is worth noting that these capsules will only break down within the certified time period if they are placed in a home compost after use.
  • If you don’t have access to a traditional home compost or simply prefer the flexibility of leaving the pods to decompose in your garden, the classic pulp capsules might be a better match. Plus, if you enjoy decaf coffee, that option is currently only available in the classic range.

Regardless of which capsule you choose, both options reflect our commitment to providing products that are good for both our customers and the environment. We’ve worked hard to ensure that whether you opt for the classic pulp or the new alternative capsules, you’re making a sustainable choice.
